PICUbootcamp_NICUairways_2015The new NC Children’s Simulation Center was the location of this past week’s annual Pediatric mini-PICU boot camp. The workshop was attended by 30+ pediatric and medicine/pediatric residents and medical students. It was a great chance to use the new center and have a centralized location for all of the simulations.

The week-long workshop included lectures related to pediatric emergencies and utilized the new simulation center for hands-on practical skills sessions. Simulation stations included vascular access, ultrasound guided vascular access, airway management, pediatric ultrasound use for lung exams and FAST exams, and case scenarios for management of common pediatric emergencies.

The workshop was organized by senior pediatric residents Erica Bjornstad, Amy Jones, Chris Nassef, and Whitney Stern. The leaders of the sessions included pediatric faculty and staff from UNC Hospitals: Sophia Aliaga (NICU attending), Ria Dancel (med/peds hospitalist), Tina DeLoach (NICU NP), Jon Heath (med/peds hospitalist), Gene Hobbs (Peds, School of Medicine Simulationist), Benny Joyner (PICU attending), Meg Kihlstrom (PICU attending), Nicole Kuhn (NICU NP), Dan Lercher (PICU fellow), William Mills (Peds ED), Afsaneh Pirzadeh (PICU attending), Linda Pudik (PICU RN), Becky Smith (PICU attending), Melissa Smith (PICU fellow); and Wake Med: Bridgett Donnell (PICU attending) and Mark Piehl (PICU attending).

Residents and medical students alike learned a lot and are excited about continued use of the new simulation center and look forward to next year’s bootcamp already!
