On March 17, 2016, a team from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine Charlotte Campus participated in the first national medical student ultrasound competition sponsored by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) in New York.

A total of 17 teams from 12 medical schools competed for the “Peter Arger Cup”. Dr. Arger is “a pioneer in imaging and a passionate ultrasound medical educator”.

Each team of three students competed in the three round event. The teams interacted with various task training models and standardized patients in the stages.

The UNC team consisted of Chris Gardner, Patrick Snyder, and Tom Rusher. Their team was mentored by Dr. Margaret Lewis. As the competition took place on St. Patrick’s Day, their team was named “The 4-Leaf Probers”.

Participants came from Eastern Virginia Medical School, Hofstra School of Medicine, Ohio State University, Rocky Vista College of Medicine, St. George’s University / Methodist Hospital, University of Connecticut, University of Florida, University of North Carolina, University of Pennsylvania, Wake Forest University, West Virginia School of Medicine, and Yale University.

Congratulations go to Ohio State University for winning this inaugural event.
