Last week, Mr McQueen and Ms Smith from the School of Medicine’s Clinical Skills and Patient Simulation Center (CSPSC) team attended the Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) meeting in Alexandria Virginia.

Mr McQueen’s presentation “Don’t just do something…stand there!” touched on the VERY important role standardized patients (SPs) take when providing only the information they are asked during a case. He also discussed using SPs in small classrooms to improve throughput challenges as well as increase faculty contact time.

Ms Smith discussed the School of Medicine’s Comprehensive Advanced Medical Program of Spanish (CAMPOS) curriculum. Recruitment of native Spanish speakers for the CAMPOS sessions creates a unique opportunity for learners to “practice their linguistic skills, increase cultural awareness and sensitivity, as well as expand their knowledge of medical challenges facing the Hispanic community.”

In addition to her presentations, Ms Smith was also appointed to the Educational Content Committee for the  meeting.
