BioGears_2_BonifacioThe BioGears Conference was hosted by Applied Research Associates this week. Speakers at the event included basic scientists, physiologists, physicians, engineers and programmers.

On the first day, UNCsim team member and Trauma Manager Al Bonifacio joined Rodney Metoyer from BioGears to discuss ARA’s Combat Medic serious game. These two former combat medics were subject matter experts in the development of this award winning project.

BioGears_1_JoynerDr. Benny Joyner, Clinical Director of the CSPSC and chief pediatric intensivist at NC Children’s Hospital, arrived for the second day to discuss how simulation is utilized to improve patient care. This discussion started with some history and blossomed into an larger view of how medical teams practice to improve care.

Dr. Nicholas Moss from UNC Physiology also presented on “Cautionary Tales in Medicinal Chemistry”. This talk focused on how actions in treatment of disease can often lead to other unexpected results. This can often impact modeling efforts and make challenges for learners.

Also attending from UNC were Mr Jeremiah Heneghan and Mr. Gene Hobbs. Mr Heneghan is the former Principal Investigator for BioGears and now Professor of Practice and Director of the Pharmacy School’s PharmaSim program. Mr Hobbs is Associate Director of Simulation in the School of Medicine and a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Pediatrics.
