Peds_Anes_Winter2016On January 8th, the UNC Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship hosted their third annual Winter Bootcamp. This event was created to facilitate the transition from trainee to faculty by providing the learners the opportunity to experience independent practice.
The cases simulated in this training reflect actual situations encountered by the faculty in the own first month of independent practice. The scenarios take place in various settings around UNC Children’s Hospital including the sedation suite and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Learners are asked to interact with the team and simulation mannequins as if these cases were actual children. Following each case, learners participate in a debrief to discuss not only the medical management but also their own crisis resource management.
Drs Paul Halweg, Eva Waller and Shannon Wolfgang from the UNC fellowship program were joined by Dr Lisa Einhorn who is currently completing her fellowship at Duke. This workshop is organized by UNC Anesthesia’s Dr Kim Blasius and Dr Hemanth Baboolal who was unfortunately unable to attend this year. The team was also joined by Anesthesiologist Dr Devika Singh from the Children’s Hospital Of Philadelphia.
Other faculty and confederates for the workshop included UNC PICU Director Dr Benny Joyner, Co-Director of the CSPSC at the School of Medicine Ms. Julie Messina, Nurse Anesthetist Ms Becky Hobbs, and Simulationist Gene Hobbs.
