Drs Slinger and Bhatia providing lung isolation instruction

The UNC Department of Anesthesia held a workshop for their residents concentrating on skills needed in the delivery and emergency treatment of thoracic anesthesia cases. The workshop was organized by Drs. Lavinia Kolarczyk, Emily Teeter, and the CAPSEL team and was held at the School of Medicine’s CSPSC facility.

Residents for this event learned specific techniques and equipment for positioning patients to prevent nerve injuries from the lateral decubitus position, skills for placing chest tubes, performing needle decompressions, as well as evaluating lung pathology utilizing ultrasound. Residents discussed lung anatomy utilizing the virtual bronchoscopy site online.

Dr. Slinger also joined the session where he taught lung isolation. Dr. Slinger is a world leader in thoracic anesthesia techniques and edited the book on it (Principles and Practice of Anesthesia for Thoracic Surgery). He is pictured to the right with Dr. Bhatia who discussed bronchoscopy with the residents.

A HUGE thank you also goes out to Drs. Feins, Haithcock, and Long from cardiothoracic surgery for sharing their expertise with the residents. Dr. Belanger, a second-year pulmonology fellow, assisted by teaching lung ultrasound techniques. In addition to Drs. Kolarczyk and Teeter, other Department of Anesthesia faculty present at the event included Drs. Barrick, Bhatia, Isaak, Martinelli, Vellanki, and Weyers. The team would also like to thank Mr. Cavoores of the Karl Storz company for his assistance and loan of equipment for this event.
