Drs. Stiegler and Rebel following the Anesthesia resident training session

Dr. Annette Rebel from the University of Kentucky visited the Consortium of Anesthesiology Patient Safety and Experiential Learning (CAPSEL) team this week. Dr. Rebel was awarded one of the four Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) education grants in 2015 with her mentors Dr. Randall M. Schell and UNC Anesthesia’s own Dr. Marjorie Stiegler. The project entitled “Anesthesia resident skill development assessed by competitive OSCE event: Anesthesia olympics
” will build on work by the CAPSEL team in Anesthesia resident Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE).

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has recently updated the education evaluation model from a time-based to a competency-based education system by implementing Anesthesiology Milestones (ACGME). Although the use of Milestones is mandated by the ACGME, there is no guidance or standard tools available to assess resident attainment of the Milestones.  The team aims to evaluate which of the milestones are best suited to evaluation via simulation (specifically, via structured OSCE-type encounters), and hypothesizes that these will overlap considerably with the milestones that are often considered most difficult to evaluate(i.e. those related to professionalism, communication and interpersonal skills, systems based practice and practice based learning and improvement).  The team will also assess the transferability of valid longitudinal assessment data for specific tasks across all anesthesiology resident training levels and across multiple institutions.

In addition to working on their FAER project, Dr. Rebel spent Monday with Dr. Stiegler for the CAPSEL weekly training sessions. The CAPSEL team hosts simulation training for both anesthesia residents and the medical students. Tuesday, Dr. Rebel assisted Dr. Rob Isaak with the first round of the Fall Anesthesia OSCE event.

FAER Grants were announced in March and the full list of awards can be found here. The Anesthesia OSCE events were also previously reported by UNC Health Care and the full article can be found here.
