Michael Gilchrist, MD MPH, has been named Director of Ultrasound Education for Medical Students in the UNC School of Medicine. Gilchrist, an Assistant Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine, Department of Medicine, co-directs Patient Centered Care (PCC), a course in which first-year and second-year medical students learn to take a history, conduct a physical examination, and perform clinical skills. He has been instrumental not only in adding ultrasound as a clinical skill to this course but also in forming an ultrasound elective in which 40 students acquire more detailed skill in this area. Under his guidance, several students are also pursuing projects in the Medical Education Scholarly Concentration Program so that the School of Medicine can implement ultrasound education more widely and evaluate its efficacy. Gilchrist earned his MD at Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed an internal medicine residency, primary care research fellowship, and MPH at UNC.
