This past weekend, faculty and fellows from the Departments of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology attended the 10th Annual Children’s Hospital Of Philadelphia (CHOP) Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) Basics Workshop. The workshop began in 2006 with 24 learners from 9 fellowship programs. This year the program included 67 learners, 35 faculty and 20 staff members from 22 programs.

Members of the faculty included Drs Kim Blasius, Benny Joyner, and Becky Smith as well as Mr Gene Hobbs. Dr Kyle Rehder, Program Director for the Duke PCCM Fellowship as well as both UNC Medical School and pediatric residency alum, participated on the faculty as well.

The PCCM Fellows are Drs Crowder and Smith. Also attending the workshop were pediatrics residency alum Drs Stephanie Permar (Duke) and Mark Connelly (Children’s National) who also served as chief residents last year.

The workshop included skills sessions such as airway management and central line placement with ultrasound. Discussions revolved around common topics like pharmacology and complex topics like breaking bad news. Simulations occurred in teams treating cases on a variety of age groups.

The team is already looking forward to next year. Dr Joyner was a fellow the first year of the workshop and served in his sixth year as faculty.

Dr Blasius will also be returning to CHOP next weekend as faculty for the Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship Bootcamp.
