Triage_TagOn August 10, Gary Moss from the University Gazette published an article following a university wide emergency response drill. The article titled “University conducts successful emergency drill” describes the simulation of fatal shootings and a hostage situation at two different locations on campus.

The standardized patient actors were moulaged to represent injures and fatalities prior to the beginning of the event. Officers had to gain access, secure the scene, and coordinate with Orange County and Durham EMS teams.

In addition to exercising emergency response procedures and communications in the field, UNC Hospitals also had the opportunity to practice and evaluate their response to mass casualty events (“Code Triage”).  For an hour, the UNC Emergency Department, Operating Room, and other units implemented unit-specific protocols to triage, manage and admit ten simulated trauma patients.  Christian Lawson, UNC Director of Emergency Services, stated that “each time we do an excersice of this nature we have the opportunity to identify gaps and opportunities to improve upon to stay continually ready.” Lawson also noted that the exercise “went quite well in the ED…” and was excited that there’s “definitely more to come.”
