Ms. Rathod filming the segment with the NC Children’s Hospital Pediatric Sedation Team.

Gayatri Rathod reported on medical error and the steps being taken at UNC Health Care to train staff in TeamSTEPPS™ (Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety) today on Carolina Week. This feature highlights UNC Children’s use of simulation training to improve communication between members of the care team and reduce the risk of error. Medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S.

TeamSTEPPS™ is an evidence-based teamwork system aimed at optimizing patient outcomes by improving communication and other teamwork skills among health care professionals. UNC Health Care’s TeamSTEPPS™ initiative is lead by patient safety officer, Celeste Mayer, PhD and supported by the UNC Hospitals Improvement Council.

Ms. Rathod is an undergraduate student majoring in Quantitative Biology with minors in Chemistry and Medicine, Literature, and Culture. She first came in contact with TeamSTEPPS™ during her “Introduction to Medical Simulation” course (CBIO 400).
