Hillsborough_Peds_SepsisOn December 22nd, Zach Read from the UNC Health Care News office published an article on the recent Sepsis UNCsim ending in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The article entitled “Sepsis Simulation: Hillsborough ED to UNC Children’s PICU” summarizes efforts by the team to improve pediatric patient care when there is a need to transport to the PICU.

This educational and quality control effort was put together by Dr. Long from the Hillsborough Hospital Emergency Department (ED) and Dr. Mills from the UNC Children’s ED. Dr. Willis and Mrs. Pumphrey both volunteered time to provide both Code Sepsis leadership as well as operational support. Dr. Willis and her son Declan were the standardized patient and confederate “mom” in the exercise.

Patient vitals for this exercise were provided via the iSimulate monitor pictured at the foot of the bed. The iSimulate was purchased earlier in 2015 with a donation from Laura and Eric Montross through the Office of External Affairs (formerly N.C. Children’s Promise).

Debriefing followed the training and reinforced the TeamSTEPPS concepts. UNCsim provided their initial TeamSTEPPS communication training in the Hillsborough Hospital ED last June. More information about that session can be found here.

The entire event was shared live over the UNCsim Twitter account. To view the timeline of commentary and photos from the day, click here.
