Mock_Code_One_Debrief
Mr Bonifacio leading the team debrief with video captured during the code.

On June 22nd, the first overhead mock code was called at UNC Health Care.

The utility of mock code drills to improve team performance has been shown. Recently, an article by a UNCsim team member, Al Bonifacio showed the benefit of “In Situ Simulated Cardiac Arrest Exercises to Detect System Vulnerabilities“.

This activity was lead by Dr. Lydia Chang from the UNC Health Care resuscitation committee. The institution of these quarterly mock codes was endorsed by nursing directors as well as Drs Lindsey, Pignone and Willis in the physician leadership. Proposal was reviewed at the full Resuscitation Committee and the Patient Safety Office.

The first session was held in the 7 Neurosciences Hospital. The session was planned to take no more that 30 minutes from the faculty and staff.

The objectives for this new initiative include:
* Identify gaps in overhead response system and paging system
* Improve time to care delivery as measured by objective timers (i.e. First MD responder, Charge RN responder, etc.)
*Improve crowd control management at the scene of a code blue
*Identify roles/responsibilities of all responders
*Identify system failures through just in time debriefing and error analysis with the intent of implementing process improvement processes
